The 3/50 Project & Small Business Saturday--Shopping Local is "In" This Holiday Season

Posted by  | November 18, 2010  at 4:08 PM
A Big Day for Small Business

This holiday season as you gear up for some serious shopping, the chicest thing you can do is shop local.  In an effort to support local businesses, American Express Open has declared the Saturday after Thanksgiving  Small Business Saturday.

One of the reasons I started this site, was to help spread the word about all of the incredible businesses we have right here in the 4-state area. In an effort to help promote Small Business Saturday I will be running a post next week on local businesses running specials for this event. So, if you are a small business owner running a promotion or if you know of any, please email me by Tuesday (11/23), so I can put it all together for a Pre-Thanksgiving post (

And while Small Business Saturday is just one day, don't forget the 3/50 project approach to supporting small, local businesses throughout the year. All you have to do is think of 3 independently owned stores you love, spend $50 per month locally, et voilà--you've helped save the local economy!

See below for more facts on the 3/50 project, and don't forget to email me those Small Business Saturday specials!

Host an Operation Christmas Child Packing Party

Posted by  |   at 1:29 PM

There’s nothing like opening a new shoebox and glancing down at a fresh pair of stilettos that have yet to be marred by city sidewalks and sudden downpours. As time passes, though, so does that new stiletto thrill, and more often than not that same magical shoebox is tossed aside or trashed. But for a less fortunate child, a shoebox from Operation Christmas Child (OCC), can hold items that are much more magical than any pair of Manolos.

OCC is a Samaritan’s Purse project that delivers goody-filled shoeboxes to children around the world. You’ll also be able to track your shoeboxes to see where they go, and I think it’s safe to say that your shoebox will cover far more miles than your stilettos ever will. Collection week runs November 15-22, so if you don’t have any extra shoeboxes I think this is an excellent excuse to acquire a new one, right? Participating in OCC takes only 5 steps that, truth be told, are probably easier than walking in 5 inch heels.

1. Find a shoebox

2. Figure out if your box is for a boy or girl

3. Fill ‘er up!

4. Include a $7 donation

5. Find a drop off location by clicking here.

I will be hosting my own "Champagne & Shoeboxes" packing party next Saturday--I reorganized my shoe collection and have tons of empty boxes that need re-purposed! My goal is to pack at least 12 boxes for girls in the 10-14 range. So far I've found some great items on sale and have a few more tricks up my sleeve (i.e. mini friendship bracelet kits). If you have any ideas or know of any businesses that would like to donate some goodies, send me an email  ( or leave a comment below. Also, if you host or attend a packing party, send me pictures and I'll post them on the site!
