Contestants Being Judged for the Decorated Heel Category

The second annual Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® (SABF) Pumps and Pearls was held Monday, April 26, at the historic George Washington Hotel in Winchester, VA. While Pumps and Pearls may be new to the SABF® it is definitely a highlight of the week--the heels were high and many of them were even adorned with miniature lights!

This year's contestants were divided into purchased pumps, decorated heels, and new to this year's event was a non-pump category that presented everything from bloomin' ballet shoes to pink and green wellie's to an ensemble of go-go boots. In addition to prizes for pretty pumps, several ladies carried away some spectacular door prizes including Mikimoto pearls and a Gucci gift certificate. Words to the wise if you're thinking of walking the pink carpet next year? Snazzy shoe designer Stacey Slaughter shared this tip: when painting, decoupaging, or bedazzling shoes it is best to size up as many paints and glues will cause the shoes to shrink!

As Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® has only just begun, there are many events left, but it's going to take more than a pair of 4-inch platforms to top Pumps and Pearls.

PVAS 2010 This RACE is for the BIRDS

Saturday, April 24, the Potomac Valley Audubon Society (PVAS) hosted the 9th Annual Race for the Birds at the National Conservation Training Center (NCTC) in Shepherdstown, WV. With storm clouds on the horizon, this year's event was almost a Dash for the Ducks; however, the rain held off and over 350 people (of which 25 were kids) raised approximately $9,000 for the PVAS! Participants chose from the 7+ mile run, the 4+ mile run, the 2 mile "Eagle's Nest" walk/jog, and there was even a 1 mile "Fun Run" for kids under 10.

R Design & Consign: A True Quality Consignment Store

"Quality Fashions for Quality Women"

A good consignment store is something to tell your friends about, but a great consignment store you almost want to keep to yourself. Let's just say you should count yourself very lucky, that I'm even writing this piece on R Design & Consign in Shepherdstown, WV.

The designation of a "good" versus a "great" consignment store relys heavily on 3 factors--pieces, prices, and placement. While part of the allure of a consignment store is hunting for bargains, you also don't want to spend hours on end digging through piles of fabric or having your eyes poked out by racks of haphazard hangers.

So how did R Design and Consign rate?

Placement: Extremely well-organized by category and size, with a special side rack for designer pieces.

Prices: Almost everything I picked up was under $20. Even the designer pieces were very fairly priced and in excellent shape, but we'll discuss that more in a bit.

Pieces: I don't know where to start--I was like a kid in a candy shop! The first thing I spotted when I walked in were these lovely Christian Louboutin pony hair peeptoes. They weren't my size, but for only $40 I considered stuffing the heels. 

I was also tempted by a Marc Jacobs denim skirt that was only $9 and this pink metallic Botkier bag that was under $30!

I saved the best for last--the 2 pieces that were without a doubt going home with me. First is this hippie-inspired Anna Sui blouse (only $12!!!)

And last, but certainly not least, this 1970's Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress (on clearance for $43!!!). I have been on the lookout for a vintage DVF dress for at least 5 years. The few that I have found were either too pricey and/or in poor condition. This dress was a truly amazing find, and I can't wait to wear it!

Located a few minutes off the Dual Highway (MD Route 40) right past Robinwood Medical Center, you'll find Safron Bakery. In addition to desserts, pastries and breads--all baked fresh daily--Safron Bakery offers a variety of soups, salads, sandwiches, and occasionally quiches that should suit even the pickiest of brunchers. The bakery offers several patio tables and ample seating indoors. Should you find yourself brunching alone or perhaps looking to get some work accomplished, Safron Bakery also offers free Wi-fi!

Since Safron Bakery is a new discovery for me (the bakery is only a little over a year old, so at least I haven't been missing out for too long), I haven't sampled all of their treats, but what I have tried has been pretty tasty. I do know one thing: on my next visit I will definitely be bringing one of these guys home with me!

Save the Date: SUFOM Presents Stomping at the Savoy

Shepherd University Friends of Music (SUFOM) will host their third annual "Tuxedo Junction" event on Friday, May 7, 2010, at the Bavarian Inn in Shepherdstown, WV. This year's theme "Stomping at the Savoy" will channel the New York nightclub scene circa the big band era--think The Stork Club, Twenty-one, Delmonico’s, The Oyster Bar at Grand Central, the Russian Tea Room and of course the Savoy Ballroom.

At this year's black-tie event, attendees will enjoy the sounds of the Shepherd University Jazz Ensemble as they play music from golden age greats such as Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, and Duke Ellington.  The 2010 Tuxedo Junction will also feature a silent auction as well as a live auction this year with local auctioneer extraordinaire Marty Kable.  Additionally, Pretty in the Panhandle will be providing full event coverage for a "Pretty People" feature following the event.

SUFOM is a non-profit organization that supports not only the Shepherd University music program, but also supports a thriving music program within the surrounding community. All proceeds from Tuxedo Junction will go to benefit the students of the Shepherd University Department of Music.

Out with the Breakfast Club in with the Brunch Bunch

Le grand petit déjeuner, Gabelfrühstück, Brunch--no matter the name, this merging of meals is one international agreement that sparks little debate. While brunch is beloved world-wide, I find that many in the Mid-Atlantic forego going out for bunch during the colder months as they tend to hibernate inside their homes. As warm weather is fast approaching, though, I believe it's time to explore our brunch options in the 4-state region. Whether you prefer a cozy café to a posh patio, or Bloody Marys over Mimosas, this monthly piece will feature dining options from Chambersburg to Charles Town to suit all varieties of brunchers. I've found quite a few places that I am very eager to try, but I would love your input! Upper Big Branch Mining Disaster: How You Can Help

Following the April 5 explosion at Upper Big Branch Mine, there are many families in Raleigh county in need of help be it physical, spiritual, or financial. 

For those looking to make a monetary contribution to the rescue efforts, USA Today recommends donating to either the Salvation Army or the Red Cross. If you have been contacted by a smaller organization seeking donations, be sure to read this article from today's Martinsburg Journal on how to ensure that your contributions will actually be making it to those in need.

As many families have dark days ahead, providing moral support--a kind word or two--can make a big difference. Some people at WVU have launched a blog where anyone can post a note, letting all of those affected know that they are not alone as they struggle through this difficult time.

Easter Weekend in the Eastern Panhandle

This past weekend there were more Easter festivities in the Eastern Panhandle than you could shake a carrot at. I couldn't make all of the events, but I did venture out to the Shepherdstown Easter Parade and the Mainstreet Martinsburg Easter Pet Hop: I even managed to do a little Easter shopping in between! While I was in Shepherdstown listening to a local ensemble play "In Your Easter Bonnet"  it was raining eggs at the Church at Martinsburg's Egg Drop at Poor House Farm. Since I can't be two places at once, a special thanks to Holly Mansfield Burns of Little Miss Sunshine Photography for allowing me to post some of her pics from the Egg Drop!

On March 1, I officially announced the launch of Pretty in the Panhandle. In the past month I've learned more about the 4-state area than I had in my 20-odd years of living in the Eastern Panhandle. I have a list of places to go and things to do, that should keep me busy for quite some time! However, this site isn't about me, it's about you, so feel free to contact me at any time with comments, inquirys, or ideas--especially ideas!

As the site develops, you will see several recurring features including "Pedi-Profiles" and "Pretty People" (local event coverage). Additionally, I will be forming "Team Pretty" for the Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk in September: details, sign ups, and donation information to follow.
