Meet Meghann--Pretty in the Panhandle's First Intern!

Posted by  | January 25, 2011  at 1:06 PM

I am very pleased to announce that Pretty in the Panhandle has just recruited local college student, Meghann Ambrose, to be the very first Pretty Intern! Be sure to keep an eye out for Meghann's posts--I believe that Meghann will be a huge asset to the website, and I look forward to working with her over the next few months! So now,  please keep reading and take a moment to Meet Meghan:

Meghann Ambrose is currently a rising junior at Shepherd University pursuing a degree in Mass Communications with a minor in print journalism. Her goal is to one day work in the field of public relations. She comes from the small town of Berkeley Springs, WV, with the ambition to one day make it to New York City. Reading and writing are not only hobbies but passions of Meghann’s. Whenever she doesn’t have her nose stuck in a book, you will find her browsing through a New York Times in her backyard hammock or cozying up to an Audrey Hepburn film with a cup of hot tea.

If you have any questions or would just like to say hello, you can reach Meghann at meghann@prettyinthepanhandle.com

Celebrate Cezanne this Saturday at Washington Street Gallery

Posted by  | January 19, 2011  at 3:34 PM

Saturday, January 22, Washington Street Gallery & Gift in Charles Town, WV will be celebrating French painter Paul Cezanne's 172nd Birthday with a full day of festivities, which will also double as a fundraiser to benefit the Arts & Humanities Alliance of Jefferson County (AHA!).

Drop by the gallery any time between 11AM and 8PM to help light up Cezanne's birthday cake by contributing $1 and placing a candle on the cake--a slice of cake is, of course, included with the donation. That evening from 5-8PM the celebration will continue with a reception and silent auction at the gallery. As always, shopping is encouraged, and 15% of Saturday's sales will be donated to AHA!

What better way to celebrate Cezanne than with cake, culture, and good company? See below for further details on AHA! and the artist himself.

Gallery Raises Funds for Local Arts Group
With Birthday Party for Painter Paul Cezanne

CHARLES TOWN, WV, January 10, 2011 -- Washington Street Gallery & Gift is marking the birthday of French painter Paul Cezanne with a celebration Saturday, January 22. The event is a fundraiser for the Arts & Humanities Alliance of Jefferson County (AHA!).

"This all-day event is a wonderful opportunity to support the arts right here in your own backyard," says gallery owner Susan Ford Pritchard. "Paul Cezanne was born 172 years ago, and just for fun, anyone can come in that day and add a candle to his birthday cake by making a one dollar donation to AHA!  And, have a piece of cake while you're there. We even provide candles." The gallery also is donating 15 percent of the day's sales to AHA!"  From 5-8 pm, the event  will also include a silent auction of pieces donated by the artists, artisans and authors at Washington Street gallery.

This event is designed to increase awareness of local arts and of the Arts & Humanities Alliance, to build membership in AHA! (annual cost is $25), and to feature the work of the gallery's 17 painters. They include Mary Kay Anderson, Joanna Athey, Pat Barnes, Bruce Chandler, Pat Donohoe, Hilda Eiber, Cathy Ingersoll, Jewell Hellems, Joan Keith, Doug Kinnett, Daniel Masi, Sandra McIver, Susan Parker, Patricia Perry, Jon Schuhart, Trish Stefanik and Mikkey Tarantino. Their work —done in oils, watercolor, acrylics, pastels and mixed media—includes landscapes, abstracts, wildlife, portraits, still-lifes and more.

Born in France in 1839, Cezanne was a Post-Impressionist painter well-known for his still-life and landscape paintings. He has inspired artists for generations, including many of those at the gallery.

The mission of AHA is to preserve the rich history and culture of Jefferson County, to encourage creative opportunity for all its citizens, to facilitate communication between those involved in the arts and humanities and the community at large, and to assist cultural groups and individuals in educational and developmental efforts.

Washington Street Gallery & Gift is the only all-local gallery in the Eastern Panhandle and features the work of 50 artists, artisans and authors from Jefferson and Berkeley County. It is located at 235 W. Washington Street in an historic building in downtown Charles Town, WVa. The gallery is open from 11 am to 8 pm on January 22.
