Mel's Cupcakery of Winchester

Mel's Chocolate-Covered Strawberry Cupcake
The cupcake craze has taken the nation by storm for one very simple reason--cupcake boutiques are the most magical places on earth (sorry Disney World)! There's just something about a shop that sells nothing but these tasty little treats that's oh so indulgent, yet fun and affordable: Mel's Cupcakery of Winchester, VA, is no exception to this rule.

From the bright decor to the proudly displayed featured flavors, the toughest part of a trip to Mel's is deciding which cupcakes to sample! As for the cupcakes themselves, I was very pleased by the moist consistency of the cake and the combination of icings & fillings which made for a sweet, but not too sweet, treat with every bite.

Flavors change by the week, but Black Forest (my fave) is a menu staple. In addition to a variety of flavors, beginning March 1, Mel's will be running a series of daily promotions from Vegan cupcakes to Happy Hour specials. I also hear that Mel may have "Pupcakes" in the future, so be sure to friend Mel's Cupcakery on facebook to learn about Mel's latest specials and promotions.

If you're on the hunt for the perfect prom dress (be it for yourself or someone else), be sure to mark your calendars for February 18 & February 27.

Friday, February 18, at 6:30 PM the Jefferson High Junior Class will be hosting a fashion show and dress auction in the Jefferson High School auditorium in Shenandoah Junction, WV. The auction will feature over 80 dresses in a range of sizes including 35 brand new ones donated by The Barn* of Inwood, WV. The event is free to the public, so this is the perfect chance to snag a gorgeous gown at a great price. Just think, with the money you save on a dress you can get a new pair of stilettos!**

and

Saturday, February 27, at 2:00 PM Reflections Day Spa will be hosting a prom fashion show at the McFarland House in Martinsburg, WV, to benefit the Women's Center and raise awarness for domestic violence. The Barn will be providing the dresses for the fashion show and Flower's Unlimited will take on the role of the decorating committee. Refershments will also be served including virgin mimosas (it is prom afterall). This event is also free to the public and a wonderful opportunity to scout out new dress styles while supporting a great cause.

*My prom dresses were from The Barn, and I LOVED them!

**Never take my financial advice, as ballet flats, peeptoes, and booties are my idea of a diverse portfolio. However, I do know shoes, and I do advise you to visit Scarpa Alta for all your financial... errr...footwear needs :)

Jala Yoga Classes at Mellow Moods

Posted by  | February 9, 2011  at 1:12 PM

If you have that New Year’s resolution to try something new, get in shape, or find a way to clear your head Jala Yoga at Mellow Moods in Shepherdstown is the place to go. It is a completely safe environment for new-comers who may not have a lot of experience with yoga. In an hour and a half you will feel completely relaxed. Any worries or stressors that you may have had before will be completely left behind after the hour and a half class. The classes are held above Mellow Moods in a beautiful antique room.

If being a newcomer to the practice of Yoga is something that worries you; worry no more. Learned from personal experience Free Yoga with Peter Yates is a great way to ease into the exercises of yoga. Peter is very good at explaining you through every stretch. You don’t have to worry about looking around the room trying to figure out what it is that you should be doing. Just by listening you won’t have to second guess yourself. If you want to refresh after class, I highly recommend the Pink Sun drink from the juice bar downstairs. If you are looking to try something different ask for a shot of Spirulina for an extra boost of energy.

Class Schedule as of February 9, 2011
Sunday 9-10:30 AM : Vinyasa Yoga with Phil Mastrangelo
Monday 6:30-7:45 PM: Jivamukti Yoga with Soozie Kinstler
Tuesday 4-5:15 PM: Power Vinyasa with Mia Hamza

21st Annual Berkeley Springs Spa Feast

Posted by  | February 3, 2011  at 5:12 PM

A Rainbow of Soaps from Star Eagle Gardens
A trip to Berkeley Springs, WV, last Saturday for the 21st Annual Spa Feast was the perfect cure for cabin fever. Held at the historic Ice House, this was an excellent opportunity to learn about and even sample a variety of health treatments. With everything on the menu from familiar spa offerings like facials and massage to more alternative therapies like Reiki and Reflexology, there was a little something for everyone--even pets!

Holistic veterinarian, Dr. Jane Doyle of Animalia Veterinary Care, was one of 11 lecturers on the agenda. Her talk included tips for natural flea and tick control (garlic and brewer's yeast) as well as a discussion on how to provide your pets with a fully nutritional, natural diet.

Since natural remedies aren't just for animals, Garnet Marsh of Washington Homeopathic Products (WHP) was on site with an array of free sample remedies from WHP. If you're not familiar with Homeopathy, I highly recommend you check out the WHP website to learn about the different remedies. Speaking from personal experience, as someone who has allergies to a lot of conventional medications, the sinus and allergy combination remedies have been absolute lifesavers. I also think that everyone should keep a bottle of the flu remedy on hand, especially at this time of year.

For those looking to stretch their limbs and perhaps their horizons, movement classes in Chi Gong, T'ai Chi, and Yoga were offered throughout the day. However, if what you really needed was some time to sit and relax, you could take a turn in the Genesa Crystal.

Feeling famished? Go visit the Giant Green Tomato! No, seriously,  Panorama at the Peak (who were promoting their Great Green Tomato Harvest) were offering tasty fruit smoothies for only $1. Additionally, Community Garden Market had an array of fresh fruits and other healthy snacks on hand for purchase.

Of course, after all that healthy business, what I really needed was some wine from Wilkes St. Wine Shop, but that's another post for another day.

Multiple marshmallow roasting stations will be located throughout the town, and many businesses will be offering free hot chocolate!

Washington St. Gallery Sings Happy Birthday to Cezanne, Blows Out Candles for AHA!

Posted by  | February 1, 2011  at 12:25 PM

Cezanne would have been honored by the birthday fĂȘte that was held last Saturday at Washington Street Gallery & Gift in Charles Town, WV. In addition to celebrating the master French painter, the event served as a fundraiser for the Jefferson County Arts and Humanities Alliance (AHA!)

A silent auction was held with items ranging from custom artwork to jewelry, including these incredible bakelite brooches by Hedgesville, WV, artist Susan Parker. Additionally, a portion of all sales that day went to AHA! as well as the funds raised from the candles placed on Cezanne's birthday cake.

Many of the gallery's featured artists were in attendance, as was well-known Washington, D.C., photographer Albert Mogzec. It was truly a wonderful evening that celebrated not only an artist of the past, but artists of the present and future as well.
