ROAD TRIP: OBX Bluegrass Fest or Bust!

Posted by  | September 27, 2012  at 9:05 PM

Main Stage on "Bluegrass Island"
This time next week I'll be topping off my tan with my toes in the sand and a frosty beverage in hand, as I anxiously await the start of the 1st Annual Outer Banks Bluegrass Festival! Over the Columbus Day holiday weekend (October 5-6) Roanoke Island will be transformed to "Bluegrass Island" as legendary acts like Doyle Lawson and Rhonda Vincent take to this sound-side stage.

Drymill Road
While this festival may be several hours southeast of the Panhandle, don't be surprised if you spot quite a few familiar faces on stage! Our region will be well-represented by some of the area's top talent when Drymill Road and Stoney Creek step on stage Friday afternoon. And, if you attended Pickin' in the Panhandle and/or Watermelon Park Fest, you'll also find familiar the sounds of Stacy Grubb & Clay Hess, Cumberland River, and (one of my new faves) The Whiskey Rebellion

For those of you attending this fest, be sure to pay special attention to the "after party" agenda. To give you a glimpse, Friday and Saturday evenings the Outer Banks Brewing Station will be hosting Drymill Road and Cumberland River respectively. Admission is free for those sporting a festival bracelet, and for others there will be a small cover charge. I did some "research" at this brewery back in August and I recommend you plan on doing some serious "sampling" while you're there.

I'll be posting pictures and tweeting throughout the weekend, so to stay in the loop (and to feed your jealousy) be sure to "Like" Pretty in the Panhandle on Facebook (www.facebook.com/prettyinthepanhandle) and follow me on Twitter ( @richelecole ) with the tag #OBXGrass.

P.S. It's not too late to plan a little last minute vacay! The weather is looking perfect--low 80's/ upper 70's-- and tickets are still available here:http://www.obxbluegrassfestival.com/#!tickets

Hot off the Plum Press...

On Saturday, September 29th from 4-9pm PLUM will be hosting a trunk show featuring the work of bead artist Susan Lico.

Susan’s creations are truly works of wearable art, unique and one of a kind. Susan is a local artist that specializes in seed bead weaving and bead embroidery with 12 years of experience in her craft. She creates beautiful jewelry pieces including necklaces, bracelets, earrings, cuffs, pendants and more using the finest seed beads, crystals, pearls, glass beads, metals, gemstones and vintage finds. Susan works alongside masters in her craft to perfect her technique and stay on the cutting edge of many bead jewelry styles. Susan continues to travel the U.S. to study with renowned teachers in her field.

Come out to PLUM this Saturday to meet Susan and see the wonderful pieces she has for sale. In addition to the many items she’ll be selling she’ll also be offering select pieces at discounted rates (10%-20% off) as well as raffling off a one of a kind piece that evening. We hope to see you there!

Editor's Note: I'm currently on shopping probation, so I'm attending under the guise of doing blog "research" -- shall we take bets on how well that plan works? ;)

Belgravia Beer Fest: Last Week for Pre-Sale Tickets

Posted by  | September 18, 2012  at 9:44 AM

Steal the Prize at Shenandoah Riverside Festival 2012
October 6, the inaugural (and hopefully annual) Belgravia Beer Festival will take place at Belgravia Manor in Edinburg, Virginia. This event will also serve as the second major fundraiser for local non-profit Earth Korps. Perhaps you recall them from their first fundraiser, the Shenandoah Riverside Festival!

This year's event will feature craft beers and local wineries, including frosty brews from one of my faves, Star Hill out of Charlottesville, VA. Since beverage sampling is known to lead to dancing, you can expect plenty of tunes from bands like The Shakedown, Steal The Prize, and The Travelin' Hillbillies to keep your toes tapping throughout the tasting.

All the proceeds from the event will go to Earth Korps Inc. for their continued efforts of environmental education and work in the Shenandoah Valley. More on this great organization can be found at www.earthkorps.org.

The cost of the event is $18.00 pre-sale and $25.00 at the gate. Designated drivers will only be charged $10 for pre-sale and $15 at the gate to come see the entertainment, and tweens under 15 are free. Everyone will be I.D.'d, though, so don't forget your identification! The special pre-sale pricing will end this week, so snag your tickets now by clicking HERE.

Posted by  | September 14, 2012  at 12:44 PM

As September days fly by and the weather begins to crisp, it can only mean one thing--'til the season for Oktoberfest!

The Annual Bavarian Inn Oktoberfest in Shepherdstown, WV, is this Sunday! It is a wonderful outdoor festival on their 11 acre hillside property, where you can enjoy stunning views of the Potomac River, while sipping your Spaten.

There will be a German Band and Dancers. There will also be lots of authentic Bavarian food and, of course, it wouldn't be Oktoberfest without some beverages!

If you have children, but no babysitter, don't worry! There will be children's activities which include: moon bounces, and pony rides.

After taking a look at the weather there is no reason for anyone to miss this fun celebration! What else are you really going to be doing on a Sunday afternoon?

Fashion Mission: Georgetown Fashions Night Out

Posted by  | September 11, 2012  at 10:08 PM

After a long awaited 3 years I was finally able to make it to Fashions Night Out. I may not have been able to make it to New York's version of this event, however, DC is definitely the next best thing.

DC's Fashion's Night Out was hosted in the historic town of Georgetown.  Shop after shop there was a wonderful surprise at every turn. Madewell hosted a braid bar for Fashion's Night Out participants. DC's Brightest Young Things hosted a marvelous event that made even a regular Joe Smoe feel like the king of kings. With champagne, mini cupcakes, photo booth, makeup bar, and red carpet it was truly a fashionista's dream.

Each store participated in their own way. JCrew sold Fashion's Night Out exclusive attire which went toward the New York City AIDS fund. Anthropologie and Madewell had a high class wine and champagne bar for store attendee's. These stores are only a small example of this fantastic event.

This event was a dream come true for a fashionista like myself. So, for all you other fashionista's out there, make sure you attend next year's Fashion's Night Out so you can experience this wonderful fashion soiree.

Watermelon Park Fest: Del, Dancing, and Thousands of Dollars in Cash and Prizes for Talented Types

Posted by  |   at 9:53 AM

Watermelon Park, June 2012
September 20-22, will be my very first outing to what many seasoned festival-goers have told me is one of the best music festivals on the East Coast--Watermelon Park Fest! Held at Watermelon Park Campground in Berryville, VA, this fest is close enough for a day trip OR (as is more likely to happen) close enough to run home and grab your camping gear when you realize you need to stay the entire weekend. :)

Some musical highlights on this year's lineup? Dirty Bourbon River Show, Acoustic Burgoo, The Woodshedders, Furnace Mountain, The Hot Seats, and Larry Keel to name a few. Oh and did I mention DEL MCCOURY?! This will be Del's only show in the great state of Virginia, so Saturday night "The Melon" is definitely THE place to party.

Speaking of parties, if you look on the official sched you'll notice there's the Sunspot Dance Tent. From what I've heard, you best bring your boogie shoes and prepare for the Watermelon Workout. People at The Melon love to dance and rumor has it that jitterbug is contagious!

For those of you looking to showcase your own musical talents at The Melon, you have the chance to wine some pretty choice prizes! Winnings include a $5,000 mandolin and up to $1,000 cash, so I'd advise you start practicing like your 3rd grade piano teacher is waiting to whack you with her metronome. More info on the contests and entry details are available HERE.

Tickets for this festival range from $40 - $80. Camping is FREE for the weekend (bring your quarters for showers), and youngsters 12 and under are free as well. Tickets for Saturday are almost SOLD OUT, so don't wait around to snag your passes! For more information on ticket packages and links to buy them online, click HERE.

Road Trip: Fashion's Night Out Georgetown

Posted by  | September 4, 2012  at 9:51 AM

Okay Fashionista's, it is that time of year again! Fashion's Night Out in Georgetown is in just a week!  As a true addict knows Fashion's Night Out has been taking place in New York City for a few years now. As you may also know last year Georgetown hosted a FNO of their own! Of course you are already aware of the details as to what FNO entails, but for those of you who are not familiar "Fashion's Night Out is an unprecedented global initiative created in 2009 in a partnership between American Vogue, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, NYC & Company, and the City of New York to celebrate fashion, restore consumer confidence, boost the industry's economy, and put the fun back in shopping." (FNO)

On top of the fabulous apparel that will be seen in every participating shop there will be plenty of places to eat! Don't miss this exciting opportunity to peruse through tons of designer goodies!

For more information and details on participating businesses, visit http://fnogeorgetowndc.com/
